Taiwan plans to reopen office in Libya this year

TAIPEI–Taiwan may reopen its representative office in the capital of Libya by the end of this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.

Taiwan expressed its willingness to resume the operation of its office in Tripoli to Libya’s interim government at a meeting in early March, said Hsu Mien sheng, director-general of the ministry’s Department of African Affairs.

“They welcome the proposal,” Hsu said at a press conference.

“There is a chance we could resume operation this year,” Hsu said, adding that Taiwan informed a Libyan vice minister of its intention at last month’s meeting.

The director-general noted, however, that many details remain to be finalized, such as the diplomatic conditions that the interim government is willing to offer.
