Cardboard train model to mark 125th year of TRA

TAIPEI — A life-size steam locomotive model, made of cardboard, will be the center of attention at the Taiwan Railways Administration’s 125th anniversary event scheduled June 9 at Taichung Railway Station.

The locomotive model and its surrounding display, which took three months to build and cost NT$800,000 (US$26,772), is 4 meters wide, 6 meters long, and weighs 1,500 kilograms, said Taichung Railway Station Manager Lin Ching-san.

On the day of celebration, the locomotive model will be attached to a cable and pulley system to enable it to be slide onto the square of the Taichung Railway Station where the anniversary event is held, he said.

A 60-year old train whistle will be added onto the model to add a bit of dramatic effect to its entrance, Lin said.
