Legislative group to visit disaster-hit areas in Japan

TAIPEI–Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng will lead a delegation on a visit to Japan, starting Sunday, to look at earthquake reconstruction work there that was funded by donations from Taiwan.

Wang, accompanied by legislators from across party lines, Taiwan’s Red Cross Society President Wang Ching-feng and tourism operators, will visit Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, two of the areas that were hardest hit by a massive earthquake and ensuing tsunami on March 11 last year.

Wang said the delegation will pay their respects to people in the disaster areas and will inspect the reconstruction work funded by various charity groups of Taiwan, including the Red Cross.

The visit is also aimed at boosting tourism exchanges between Taiwan and the two prefectures, he said.

The delegation will be received by Miyagi Magistrate Yoshihiro Murai and Fukushima Magistrate Yuhei Sato.

The group will later call on Japanese parliament members and ranking officials of Japan’s ruling and opposition parties in Tokyo, before returning to Taiwan on July 7.
