AUSTIN, Texas–Officials tell The Associated Press that the U.S. Air Force has relieved a top base commander in the wake of a widening sex scandal.

Col. Glenn Palmer has overseen basic training for all of the country’s new recruits at Lackland Air Force base in Texas. Officials familiar with the decision said Friday that Palmer has been relieved from those duties. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made public.

More than a dozen military instructors at Lackland have been investigated or charged with sexually assaulting recruits. Investigators say more than three dozen female trainees were victimized.
