TAIPEI, Taiwan — The cold weather in Taiwan is forecast to continue into New Year’s Day as the country remains under the influence of a cold surge that arrived Sunday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.
Temperatures could hover between 10-12 degrees Celsius in Northern, Central, Southern and Northeastern Taiwan, and 12-14 degrees in eastern Taiwan, from late Monday into early Tuesday, the bureau said.
It advised people to dress warmly for outdoor activities such as New Year countdowns.
Daily highs are forecast to return to above 17 degrees in northern Taiwan, and 20-23 degrees in central and southern Taiwan later Tuesday as the cold surge begins to weaken, it said.
As of 11 a.m., the lowest temperature recorded Monday in a low-lying area was 7.5 degrees in Tamsui, northern Taiwan, the bureau said. The previous day, the low in that area was 7.3 degrees, a record for 2012.
