Myanmar-language phones to be launched by HTC Corp.

TAIPEI — Taiwanese handset maker HTC Corp. said yesterday it will launch customized phones in Myanmar that can display that country’s language, with the aim of expanding its presence in the untapped mobile market more.

The launch ceremony in Myanmar yesterday afternoon marked HTC’s first foray into the country’s smartphone market, with the opening of new retail stores and the sale of HTC devices in big cities such as Yangon, HTC told CNA.

HTC has worked with a Myanmar distributor and a software developer there to customize Google Inc.’s Android operating system, allowing users of HTC devices to read and type more easily with a Myanmar-language onscreen keyboard and fonts, according to Reuters news.
