HP ranked 2012’s biggest PC vendor, Acer 4th

TAIPEI — U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard ranked as the world’s largest personal computer vendor in 2012, while Taiwan’s Acer Group and Asustek Computer Inc. took the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively, market information advisory firm Gartner said yesterday. Last year, HP shipped 56.51 million PC units, down 6.7 percent from a year earlier. The U.S. vendor had a 16-percent global market share in 2012, down from 16.6 percent in 2011.

Meanwhile, Acer’s PC shipments dropped 6.7 percent year-on-year to 36.66 million units in 2012. This accounted for 10.4 percent of the world’s total, down from 10.8 percent a year earlier and put Acer in fourth place globally.

For Asustek, its shipments rose 17.1 percent annually to 24.21 million units last year, which represented 6.9 percent of the global total, up from 5.7 percent in 2011. Asustek finished the year as the world’s fifth largest PC vendor.

Lenovo Group of China was ranked as the second largest PC vendor last year, with shipments of 52.16 million units, an increase of 14.2 percent year-on-year. The Chinese firm accounted for 14.8 percent of the world’s total PC shipments, rising from 12.5 percent a year earlier.

Dell Inc. of the U.S. was third with shipments of 37.61 million units, down 12.3 percent annually. Dell’s market share in 2012 was 10.7 percent, dropping from 11.7 percent the previous year.

Gartner said global PC shipments totaled 352.70 million units in 2012, down 3.5 percent from 2011.

In the fourth quarter of last year, global PC shipments fell 4.9 percent from the same period of 2011 to 90.37 million units, Gartner said.

HP was biggest vendor in the fourth quarter with a market share of 16.2 percent, followed by Lenovo with 15.5 percent, Dell with 10.2 percent, Acer with 9.5 percent and Asustek with 7.2 percent, the market advisory firm said.

The decline in PC shipments reflected a changed market landscape, along with an economic slowdown, as many consumers shifted to tablet computers, Gartner said

Last week, another market information advisory firm International Data Corp. said 2012 global PC shipments fell 3.2 percent annually to 352.42 million units.
