TAIPEI–Taiwanese computer makers Asustek Computer Inc. and Acer Inc. see great potential in the low- and middle-end tablet computer market and are launching more such products amid expected fierce competition this year.

Eyeing the growing popularity of tablet computers, especially in the mid- to low-priced categories, both Asustek and Acer are aiming to expand their market shares.

According to CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets, shipments of “white-box” tablet computers — those without a registered brand name — are forecast to reach 100 million units worldwide in 2013, way above some 60 million units a year ago.

It could be a huge business opportunity to tap into the estimated US$10 billion-US$13 billion market this year, the research firm said.
