BUCHAREST — A Bucharest court on Thursday sentenced a jobless Romanian man to life in prison for killing and raping a young Japanese woman and two others in a murderous spree that began in 2010.

Nicolae Vlad, 26, was convicted of the murder of 20-year-old Yurika Masuno in August last year, when she arrived in Romania to teach Japanese. Prosecutors said Vlad had met Masuno at the airport and lured her into a taxi, taking her to a nearby forest where he attacked her. Vlad was also found guilty of raping and murdering two other women in the Bucharest area and raping four others in a series of crimes dating back to 2010.
