TAIPEI — Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai set out for the United States on Sunday on a trip to inspect Taiwan’s cultural promotion work there.
Lung will visit two centers for the Taiwan Academy, an educational program, in Los Angeles, California and Houston, Texas to inspect progress and evaluate new locations for the centers which are currently housed in Taiwan’s overseas offices.
The three Taiwan Academy centers, including one in New York, were set up two years ago to promote the study of Taiwan’s languages and culture in the international community.
During her stay, the minister plans to visit the California Museum of Photography and get an up-close look at the film and television industries in Los Angeles, the ministry said.
The visits will help the culture ministry with policy decisions related to Taiwan’s photography museum work and entertainment industries, it said.
The ministry hopes to use the Los Angeles Taiwan Academy as a launching center for Taiwan’s performing and visual arts, publications, film and TV, and cultural and creative products in the western United States.
The Houston center will be responsible with expanding cultural ties between Taiwan and the local community and with Central and South America, the ministry said.
Lung is scheduled to return to Taiwan on Sept. 3.
