TAIPEI, Taiwan — A detective was indicted yesterday for allegedly raping a suspect during interrogation at a police station, prosecutors in Changhua said.
According to the indictment, the officer, surnamed Cheng, arrested the female suspect in connection with certain drug and theft cases in June and sexually assaulted her while questioning her inside an interrogation room at the police station in Changhua. Cheng, a detective from Changhua’s criminal investigation division, admitted that he had sex with the woman, but claimed that she seduced him. Prosecutors said, however, that they determined that Cheng’s claim was false after reviewing the surveillance camera footage of the interrogation. The woman reported the sexual assault during the interrogation to prosecutors.
The Changhua Police Department said the National Police Agency has already suspended Cheng from duty. It said it will also review the interrogation procedures and improve training for its officers.
