Marred by charges in breach of trust case, justice minister gets the boot

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Justice Minister Tseng Yung-fu has been discharged from his position with immediate effect, in accordance with a personnel order signed by President Ma Ying-jeou and delivered to the Justice Ministry Tuesday.

Deputy Justice Minister Chen Ming-tang will serve as acting minister from Wednesday until a new appointment is made, the Executive Yuan said.

Tseng tendered his resignation pm Sept. 6 after being accused of using his influence to pressure the prosecutor in charge of a breach of trust case not to appeal a High Court verdict. The case involved opposition Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Ker Chien ming, who was found not guilty after two previous guilty verdicts. Tseng’s resignation was accepted immediately that day by Premier Jiang Yi-huah.
