Taiwanese cafe to open more US outlets

TAIPEI–Gourmet Master Co. Ltd., which operates the 85°C cafe and bakery chain in Taiwan, will double the number of its outlets in the United States by the end of the year, an executive said Saturday.

With the first U.S. central kitchen starting operations last week, “we would like to speed up the pace of launching more outlets,” said Hsieh Chien-nan, the company’s chief executive officer.

Currently, there are four outlets in the U.S., Hsieh told reporters in Taichung, central Taiwan, adding that five more are expected to open within the next two months. The company plans to have a total of 30 outlets in the U.S. in 2014, Hsieh said, adding that 25 of them “have nearly been confirmed.”

The 85°C Bakery Cafe has gained a lot of popularity in the U.S. It was selected by social networking website Foursquare Sept. 29 as one of the 10 most popular chains in America.

The average annual revenue of each of the 85°C Bakery Cafe stores in the U.S. is about US$6 million, roughly the equivalent of that of eight outlets in China, according to the company.
