First lady follows Taiwan Philharmonic to Europe


TAIPEI — First lady Chow Mei-ching (周美青) will attend the National Symphony Orchestra’s last two concerts in Europe this month as the honorary leader of the orchestra.

The first lady is scheduled to make an appearance at the orchestra’s concert in Geneva on Friday and in Berlin on Nov. 18 to offer her support, according to the ensemble, also known as the Taiwan Philharmonic.

Foreign representatives at the United Nations and at international organizations such as the Red Cross Society will also attend the Geneva concert, according to the orchestra.

Led by conductor Lu Shao-chia, the orchestra will perform pieces by European composers such as Sibelius, Strauss and Beethoven and will also present Taiwanese composer Yen Ming hsiu’s “Breaking Through” at the two concerts.
