Charity builds classrooms in typhoon-hit Philippines

MANILA — A Taiwan-based Buddhist charity, Tzu Chi Foundation, is building dozens of makeshift classrooms for school children in typhoon devastated areas of the Philippines so that they can start school again as soon as possible, a foundation member said Tuesday.

Lin Hsiao-cheng, a former chief executive of Tzu Chi’s Philippine chapter, said the foundation has started its plan to erect 53 makeshift classrooms and shelters in Tacloban, one of the areas in the central Philippines hardest hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan on Nov. 8.
