Ma urges closer ties with diplomatic ally Paraguay

TAIPEI, Taiwan — President Ma Ying-jeou urged the Paraguayan Senate Monday to exert its influence and help promote ties between Taiwan and the South American nation through a recently established “Republic of China friendship committee” set up by the senate.

The committee, created Dec. 12, is the first friendship group set up by the senate since the opening of the session in July, Ma said during a meeting with a delegation of Paraguayan senators led by Senate President Julio Cesar Velazquez.

Ma said he hopes the committee can push the Paraguayan government to take substantive action in support of Taiwan’s bid to participate in international activities and organizations.
