TAIPEI–The Taipei Zoo is working around the clock to care for two otter pups recently found abandoned in the outlying county of Kinmen, zoo officials said.
The pups, both male and about one month old, were found near a pond, where their den had apparently been damaged by humans, the zoo said. The pups were later sent to Taipei Zoo by the Kinmen National Park as their mother was nowhere to be found, said zoo spokesman Tsao Hsien-shao. The pups, identified as European otters, are extremely rare in Taiwan, Tsao said, noting that none of them have been recorded over the past 30 years on Taiwan proper.
The zoo will discuss with experts on whether to keep the otters or release them back into the wild after their health stabilizes, he said.
