TAIPEI, Taiwan — Propelled by strong March sales results, HTC (宏達電) yesterday mounted a spirited rally, gaining NT$5.5, or 3.57 percent, to close at NT$159.5. Most notably, intraday volume for HTC shares expanded to 20.209 billion shares, with prices regaining technically significant indicators.
The handset maker yesterday announced its first-quarter results for this year, recording a net loss of NT$1.88 billion on revenues of NT$33.12 billion, representing an earnings-to-share performance rating of minus NT$2.28 over the period.
Performance in the first quarter, however, was buoyed by strong revenues over March that reached NT$16.225 billion that improved by 126 percent month-on-month and 2.16 percent year-on-year. The company stated that first-quarter declines were in line with expectations, while expressing an upbeat outlook on sales prospects to improve as the year progresses following the global launch of its M8 flagship handset and Desire 816 mid-range model for the mainland China market.
Incidentally, amid the lack of high-profile fanfare the company yesterday hinted that more ramped up marketing campaigns will commence in the second half of this year along with additional new product launches.
HTC Continues Collaboration with Chunghwa Telecom Meanwhile, the company yesterday continued its partnership with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT, 中華電) by signing a memorandum of understanding for the eighth consecutive year.
Throughout last year CHT was the handset maker’s largest retailer, with sales over the period growing by 70 percent year-on-year. The two companies yesterday announced its intent to harness the impending arrival of the fourth-generation (4G) mobile broadband network.
According to the companies, HTC will continue to design and build customized handset units catering to Taiwan’s leading telecoms carrier, while CHT will begin efforts toward offering more content services and establish store-front interactive displays to spur on the proliferation of the 4G network in Taiwan.
Far EasTone (遠傳) also announced its intent to continue its partnership with the handset maker, while stating its ambition to begin testing for the 5G network.
