Chinese official hopes to make early visit to Taiwan

BOAO, China — Zhang Zhijun, Minister of Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council, believes that the recent Sunflower student movement has given him more reason to come to Taiwan, and he hopes to make a visit before the end of June, he said yesterday.

When quizzed by Taiwanese media at the opening of the 2014 Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), Zhang said he did not know if he will visit in April as originally planned, just that he hopes it will be within the first half of the year.

The minister postponed his plans for the April visit after the outbreak of protests in Taiwan against the cross-Taiwan Strait trade-in-services agreement with China.
