After six years, Kinmen residents can enjoy weekend at the movies

TAIPEI — Residents in Kinmen are now finally able to enjoy new films in the theater for the first time since 2008, when the last cinema on the small archipelago closed.

Golden Lion Cinemax opened Wednesday in Kinmen County, home to some 122,000 people, bringing a six-screen multiplex to the Wind Lion Plaza shopping center that includes a “4D” auditorium.

During a preview of the cinema Tuesday, Kinmen Magistrate Li Wo-shi thanked Taiwan Land Development Corp., the company behind both the theater and the mall, for bringing what he called “the best” facility to the county.

Taiwan Land Development Chairman Chiu Fu-sheng said that his company used “world-class technology” to let Kinmen keep up with trends in the world at large.

The main auditorium of the new cinema can seat 462 and has a screen measuring 22 meters by 12 meters, the largest in Taiwan to feature Dolby Laboratories Inc.’s Atmos surround sound technology, the company said.

It is also equipped with “4D” viewing facilities that add physical experiences like scent or vibration to 3D films.

Each of the five other auditoriums has between 54 and 94 seats, according to the developer.

Chiu also took the opportunity to promote the shopping center, set for a gradual phase-by-phase opening starting in June, which he said will offer new experiences to local shoppers including items and luxury goods currently not available elsewhere in Kinmen.
