KANSAS CITY, Kansas — Sporting Kansas City’s Dominic Dwyer headed in his 21st goal of the season to help his team clinch a playoff spot with a 2-0 home victory over Chicago in rainy conditions.
Kansas City moved into second place in the Eastern Conference, three points behind D.C. United. Chicago had its winless streak hit seven matches.
Dwyer is three goals behind New York’s Bradley Wright-Phillips in the race for the Golden Boot. He had a chance to be closer but struck a penalty over the crossbar in the 13th minute.
Sporting took a 1-0 lead in the 80th minute through Graham Zusi’s curled shot from distance.
Meanwhile, Vancouver’s Kekuta Manneh scored in the final minute of the first half and the Whitecaps won 1-0 at Seattle to move back into position for a playoff spot.
In front of 55,765 fans, the Whitecaps won their third straight game and jumped a point ahead of Portland for the fifth and final Western Conference playoff spot. Both teams have two games remaining.
The Sounders remained tied with Los Angeles atop overall MLS standings. The L.A. Galaxy visit Dallas on Sunday, then will face Seattle home and away.
Manneh’s goal came off a counterattack. Midfielder Pedro Morales sent a long through ball to a streaking Manneh on the left. Manneh took the ball into the area, beat a defender and sent a 14-yard shot into the net.
