Beijing to adhere to ‘one China’ doctrine: US expert

WASHINGTON — Beijing is not expected to change its one China principle in dealing with Taiwan, despite the impressive victory scored by the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Saturday’s local elections in Taiwan, an American expert said Sunday. Douglas Paal, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said it is hard to tell at present whether China will change its policy toward Taiwan, because this will depend on what steps are taken by the DPP.

Whatever the situation, Paal said he believes Beijing will not ease its one China principle but will continue and strengthen it.

Paal was an unofficial U.S. representative to Taiwan as director of the American Institute in Taiwan.
