Wildfire spreads across Alishan mountain

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A wildfire broke out on Taiwan’s Alishan mountain in Chiayi County yesterday, and as of 5:30 p.m. the fire had spread over up to five hectares. @The fire was first reported at around 1 p.m., and by the time firefighters reached the scene heavy smoke was already rising from a cliff. Spots of fire were visible on the mountain’s slope. According to the Forestry Bureau, lack of rain had created a patch of arid grassland, so when the fire broke out it ended up spreading at a much faster pace.

The fire broke out around a mountain cliff, making it much more difficult for firefighters to put out the fire. They brought along equipment such as portable pumps and pressurized water tanks. To make the situation worse, a blanket of fog emerged in the region as firefighters tried to control the flames. Upon night fall, it created more difficulties for the firefighters. Nevertheless, it was fortunate that the fire did not reach the part of the woods where rare and precious trees grow. Also, the fire did not interrupt traffic on the mountain.
