TAIPEI–Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying advanced to the women’s singles final of the US$1 million Badminton World Federation’s Dubai World Superseries Finals on Saturday with a victory over world No. 4 Saina Nehwal of India. Tai, ranked ninth in the world, recovered from a slow start to upend Nehwal 11-21, 21-13, 21-9 in 55 minutes and reached the finals of the prestigious tournament.
She will next play the winner of the other women’s singles semifinals match between Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea and Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, who defeated Tai in the preliminary round.
Nehwal entered Saturday’s match having won all three of her preliminary round contests in the year-end event and seemed poised to continue her strong run after routing Tai in the opening game and rallying from a five-point deficit to tie the second game at 12-12.
But the 20-year-old Taiwanese ran off nine of the next 10 points to clinch the game and even the match and then put Nehwal away with an 11-1 run early in the third game.
