FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin — An international sailing competition is being held in eastern Wisconsin on a frozen Lake Winnebago. The World Ice and Snow Sailing Championships bring ice and snow sailing enthusiasts from 11 countries to compete in three disciplines: kites, wings and sails. Group President Will Tuthill says the amateur event is the longest running international racing event in the history of windsurfing, hand-held sails and kites. It’s the third time the event has been held in the United States in 35 years. Other countries competing include Russia, Latvia, Sweden and Finland. Winnebago Association of Kiteboarders President Dan Deuster (DOY-ster) says most people dread strong winds, but these competitors live for them.
Winners get to call themselves world champions and get a trophy. The event runs until Saturday.
