TAIPEI, Taiwan — Tainan City Government’s Department of Information and International Relations Director Wu Tang-cheng (dŦ) yesterday was drenched in water by a Kuomintang (KMT) city councilor due to accusations that the KMT had a hand in illicit procedures. The water-drenching incident occurred during questioning of Wu by Lin Yen-chu (LP), the city councilor in question. The city council meeting was adjourned early due to the attack.
Lin explained that her anger was due to the city government’s defaming of the KMT in a press release, and said that her actions came from a lack of self-control upon seeing Wu’s mocking smile. Lin eventually apologized for her actions in a statement. Tainan City Council Speaker Lee Chuan-chiao () expressed his disappointment with Lin’s actions, and implored councilors to conduct rational inquiries and refrain from physically attacking others.
However, Lee commended Lin’s willingness to apologize for her conduct within a reasonable time frame.
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials pointed out that this was not the first time Lin has physically attacked someone. Water-drenching incidents occurred in Deputy City Council Speaker Kuo Hsin-liang’s (H}) office several times before, officials said.
Tainan City Councilor Kuo Kuo-wen () of the DPP said that Lee had previously implored city councilors to treat one another with respect on Tuesday, but Lin’s actions yesterday smashed the fragile impasse at the Tainan City Council. DPP officials also vehemently demanded that the KMT discipline its councilors’ actions to guarantee not allowing a similar incident to occur in the future, and further demanded that the issue be raised with the party’s Discipline Committee.
