TAIPEI, Taiwan — A total of 201 foreign students have been granted government-funded scholarships this year, which will allow them to study in higher education institutes in Taiwan, the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF, X|) announced yesterday. Speaking during a regular news briefing, Weber Shih (Iy), secretary general of the ICDF, said that the annual program offers full scholarships to students from Taiwan’s diplomatic allies and friendly nations to study in undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. programs at local higher-learning institutions. Following months of reviews, the ICDF and partner colleges have decided to grant scholarships to 201 students to study at 21 local universities in 33 different programs this year. Shih said the program plays a vital role in assisting these foreign students to better understand Taiwanese culture.

The project also helps Taiwanese students explore their worldview by studying together with these international students, he noted. Many of those who previously received the ICDF scholarship returned to their home countries to put the knowledge and skills learned in Taiwan into practical use to help their countries. The program, introduced in 1998, was first launched to train professionals in the agricultural industry. This was later expanded to include other research fields to diversify the overall scholarship program. As of the end of 2014, the ICDF scholarship program had benefited a total of 1,335 foreign students. Currently, 488 students from 36 countries are now studying in Taiwan under the project. The ICDF is a semiofficial Foreign Ministry-funded nongovernmental organization responsible for international aid.
