Foundation seeks to lure tourists with live theater

TAIPEI — A local foundation said recently it will launch a unique show that comprises performances by traditional groups and pop stars, to promote Taiwanese culture and attract foreign tourists.

The production, named “The Stars,” is based on the legend of the Qixi Festival — the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day.

It will be staged Sept. 5 at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei, said the iSee Taiwan Foundation.

A total of six performance groups, including the Ten-Drum Cultural Creative Group, Diabolo Dance Theatre and Lan Yan Dancers, will come together to tell the love story of a Taiwanese aboriginal woman and an American man.

Taiwanese pop stars Liang Yi cheng and Coke Li will play the main characters, giving the show a fresh young look, the foundation said.

“We hope the theater performance will be a fusion of arts that integrates different elements of Taiwanese culture,” said the foundation’s chairwoman Audrey Yang.

The 90 minute show will also seek feedback from the audience of some 2,500 invited guests, including 300 foreign nationals, and will make adjustments based on their responses, in the hope of making it a sustainable and profitable program to attract foreign tourists, she said.

Yang said she also hopes the show will help encourage different artistic groups to work more closely together.
