TAIPEI, Taiwan — The New Taipei City Pingxi Lantern Festival, kicking off in February, will present breakthrough visual designs, featuring illustrations as the main visuals to convey the heartwarming image of sky lanterns, according to government officials.

In other countries, newlyweds invite guests to press their fingerprints onto wishing trees as a form of blessing to the couple, said officials. Next year, they hope sky lanterns will serve a similar function for tourists and residents in New Taipei City, carrying blessings up to the heavens.

The main theme of the first festival event is “childhood joys,” where young visitors are asked to offer their fingerprints to help decorate the 8-foot-tall “main lantern.” The first lantern event will be held on Feb. 11 at Qingtong Elementary School (菁桐國小). The second will be on Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, on the campus of Pingxi Junior High School (平溪國中). The third, Lantern Festival, will be on Feb. 22 on Shifen Sky Lantern Square (十分廣場).
