Man detained over alleged illegal election gambling ring


TAIPEI–A court on Monday ordered a man suspected of masterminding an illegal nationwide gambling operation that accepted bets on results of the Jan. 16 presidential and legislative elections be detained and held incommunicado after he failed to raise the NT$5 million (US$151.000) needed to make bail, according to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office.

Taoyuan prosecutors and police officers raided 31 locations around Taiwan Saturday, arrested 45 people and seized NT$20.68 million in cash after receiving tip-offs about the gambling ring, according to prosecutors.

According to betting records, authorities found a total of NT$1.4 billion in bets have been placed.

An investigation into the alleged illegal gambling and money laundering operations of the 45 people arrested has been set up, prosecutors added.
