Hong Kong woman gives liver to Taiwanese patient

TAIPEI–A Hong Kong woman, who was pronounced braindead, donated her liver to a Taiwanese patient on Tuesday, according to Hong Kong health authorities.

The organ was donated to a patient in Taiwan because there was no suitable recipient in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority said Tuesday.

After obtaining the consent of the family of the donor and the approval of Hong Kong health authorities, the liver was transferred to a Taiwanese medical team at Hong Kong International Airport later Tuesday.

The team from Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital flew back to Taiwan shortly after to perform the transplant on a Taiwanese man, a liver cancer patient who has been waiting for a new liver for more than a year, Taiwanese media reported.

The surgery, which was completed Wednesday morning, reportedly went well. The hospital was scheduled to hold a news conference later Wednesday.
