Ma will not retake KMT chairmanship: spokesman

TAIPEI–President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) has no plans to retake the chairmanship of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) after the Jan. 16 elections, Presidential Office spokesman Charles Chen (陳以信) said Wednesday.

“That’s not a possibility,” Chen said in response to a Next Magazine report earlier in the day, which said Ma had decided to assume chairmanship of the KMT again after the upcoming presidential and legislative elections.

Chen said people should stop circulating such rumors as the president had already made it clear during a visit to Nantou County on Nov. 24 that the speculations were unfounded.

Jason Hu (胡志強), the campaign manager of the KMT’s presidential candidate and current chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫), also said at press conference that it was highly unlikely Ma would seek to take up the party chairmanship again.
