TAIPEI, Taiwan — Eleven people are being treated after three vehicles collided on Provincial Highway No. 82, near Chiayi County’s Shueishang Township (水上), according to the local fire department on Sunday. According to officials from the Chiayi County Fire Bureau, the accident happened at around 2 p.m., and involved a convertible, a van and a sightseeing bus. Eleven people have been slightly injured, said the fire bureau.
Two injured people in the convertible were sent to Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CCGMH, 嘉義長庚紀念醫院). Among the nine passengers on the sightseeing bus, eight were sent to Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital (大林慈濟醫院) and one was sent to CCGMH. According to the Central News Agency, the passengers on the sightseeing bus were volunteers for the Buddhist charity organization, the Tzu Chi Foundation (慈濟) and people that were being cared for by the volunteers. The vehicle had left a Lunar New Year charity feast held in Chiayi City, taking participants back home The bureau stated it had received reports that three vehicles had crashed into each other. Officers immediately dispatched ambulances from nearby task forces to the site of the accident. According to the police, a van collided with a convertible. The sightseeing bus behind them was suspected to have had “not enough time” to correct its path to avoid the accident, crashing into the two cars, said officers. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, remarked officers. It is unknown if weather was a factor in the accident, as of press time.
