TAIPEI–Tokyo is the top Lunar New Year holiday overseas destination for Taiwanese travelers this year for the second consecutive year, according to data compiled by global travel search engine Skyscanner.
Tokyo maintained its top position this year in the top 10 cities Taiwanese people most like to visit during the Lunar New Year holiday, followed by Osaka, Bangkok, Okinawa, and Seoul.
Rounding out the top 10 were Hong Kong, Singapore, Fukuoka, Sapporo and Nagoya.
Looking at Taiwanese travelers’ top 10 travel destination choices from 2014 to 2016 through an analysis of big data, Skyscanner found that Japanese cities have become increasing popular with Taiwanese tourists during the holiday period.
Only two Japanese destinations were included in the top 10 in 2014, but six made it into the top 10 in 2016.
The depreciation of the Japanese yen and increased efforts by the Japanese government to promote tourism and attract Taiwanese to new scenic spots have been among the main factors in the increased popularity of destinations there, Skyscanner said.
On the other hand, the presence of Western cities in the top 10 list has fallen over the past few years, indicating that short-term travel during the Lunar New Year break has gradually taken the place of long-haul travel, which requires more time.
This year’s Lunar New Year holiday begins on Feb. 6 and will last through Feb. 14.
