Massive inferno rages in Luzhou after fire breaks out at factory site

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A massive fire has broken out at an industrial complex in New Taipei City’s Luzhou District.

As of Saturday evening, firefighters had yet to extinguish the blaze, but police said no injuries had been reported.

The New Taipei City Fire Department dispatched 75 fire engines of various types and 208 firefighters to the site near Minzu Road, soon after being informed of the fire at around 4:40 p.m.

As of 6 p.m., as many as 10 factories in the complex were ablaze, and as of 7:05 p.m., firefighters had yet to extinguish the inferno. The factories involved in the fire were engaged in the manufacture of kitchenware, fabrics, household electrical appliances, and aluminum warehousing,

Police said firefighters had already set up a firewall to prevent the flames spreading to the mechanical maintenance plant of the nearby Luzhou MRT station, located around 200 meters from the site of the fire.

Authorities said they would not be able to determine the cause of the fire until it was fully extinguished.
