Former sports commentator Fu Da-jen (傅達仁) wrote a letter to President Tsai Ing-wen calling for the government to legalize euthanasia, offering to volunteer as the first person to undergo euthanasia in the country. Fu said many people over the age of 75 are not able to take care of themselves.

“They not only add a burden to their families and themselves, but also require a massive amount of resources from society and the country,” said Fu. “I myself am combating illness, and I have decided to take a stand and write this letter to President Tsai Ing-wen asking her to push for the euthanasia bill.” The 84-year-old said he had undergone six surgeries over the past three months. The presidential spokesman said he would look more deeply into the content of Fu’ s letter and seek assistance from concerned agencies, and wished him good health.
