College soccer tourney gears up for kickoff

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A Copa America (American Cup) soccer tournament featuring college students from Taiwan and American nations will kick off in Taipei on Sunday April 30. The Taiwan Copa America, an event with both cultural and social background organized by a group of university students from different nationalities, will be held at the Yingfeng soccer fields (迎風足球場) in Taipei’s Dajia Riverside Park.

The first round of games will be held on April 30, with the final round to be held the next day.

The sponsors for this competition are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan and the embassies and representative offices accredited to the Republic of China (Taiwan) from the participating teams’ countries. The event features female and male soccer teams competing for the Copa America 2017 first, second and third places in the two categories, with players from Argentina, Belize, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Taiwan and Venezuela.

The tournament sees Taiwan’s Latino community seeking to promote cultural events that enhance ties with Taiwan are aiming to unify people from Latin American countries residing in Taiwan, with the main purpose of establishing a strong foundation of support and solidarity among them. Another aim is to and promote projects focused on social assistance with the creation of teams for social volunteering in order to create a positive impact.

This will be the fourth year that this event is held in Taiwan.
