TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Council of Agriculture (COA) on Tuesday revised upwards its estimate of agriculture losses caused by torrential rain last week from NT$41.49 million to NT$60.11 million (US$1.97 million).
The COA said that Chiayi County suffered the brunt of the losses with NT$34.47 million, followed by Nantou County at NT$5.68 million, Yunlin County NT$5.66 million, Taichung NT$3.63 million and Miaoli County NT$3.13 million.
Crop damage accounted for most of the losses, with 2,173 hectares of farmland and NT$44.78 million in crops damaged, the COA said, noting that included 1,593 hectares of rice paddies causing NT$30.09 million in damage.
Other crops hit by the heavy rain included watermelon, lychees, peanuts and persimmons, it added.
Meanwhile, damage to agricultural facilities is estimated at NT$15.33 million.
