Kinmen will host an international music festival — but there’s no need to rush

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s outlying county of Kinmen is expected be inundated with musical visitors this summer attending an international musical festival that will last two months, beginning on July 1.

The Quemoy International Music Festival, an event planned for the first time in Kinmen, an island group off southern China, will be held at Houhu Seashore Park from July 1 to Aug. 30, with musical performances every Wednesday and Saturday, according to the organizers.

Popular pop singers and musical bands, including Wu Bai (伍伯) and his band China Blue, have been invited to perform at the festival, the organizers said.

In addition, 44 groups of musicians and singers from areas and countries around Asia, including Hong Kong, Macao, Thailand, China and Taiwan, have been chosen to perform, the organizers said.

“More beautiful voices should be heard,” the organizers said.

Quemoy was the name used by the Portuguese in the 15th and 16th centuries when they heard the name Kinmen pronounced in the Minnan (southern Fujian) dialect, according to the organizers.
