Messi marries childhood sweetheart in hometown of Rosario

BUENOS AIRES — Barcelona and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi married his childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo Friday evening in his hometown of Rosario.

The bride wore a figure-hugging white wedding dress by Catalan designer Rosa Clara.

A total of 260 people were invited to the star-studded event at the City Center hotel and casino complex, including Barcelona team-mates such as Brazilian star Neymar and Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, as well as team staff.

Colombian popstar Shakira and her boyfriend, footballer Gerard Pique, also attended.

The complex was heavily guarded by around 400 police officers and some 150 journalists were also on hand.

Messi and his bride booked all the rooms for their wedding guests and also hired hairdressers and child-minders.

There was only a civil ceremony and no church wedding.

A couple of key names, such as football legend Diego Maradona, were missing from the guest list.

Former coach Luis Enrique, who departed Barcelona at the end of the season, was reportedly also not invited.

Of Messi’s team-mates from Barcelona, only Andres Iniesta couldn’t make the event, as he wanted to stay home with his newborn daughter.

The couple, who have two children, declined wedding gifts and asked for donations to a local charity instead.

The menu had typical Argentine elements and included beef fillet and bom bom sausages, washed down with champagne and fine wines.
