LONDON — The 146th Open Championship began at Royal Birkdale, Liverpool, in heavy rain on Thursday, making conditions difficult for the early starters.

American Mark O’Meara, the winner at Birkdale in 1998, hit the first tee shot but ended up with a quadruple-bogey eight, having put his tee shot into the bushes.

Former Masters champion Danny Willett was one of only three players under par after almost two hours of play.

The weather was expected to improve throughout the day, with many of the favorites due to tee off later.
