A Briton applied for asylum at a German airport

MUNICH — A 41-year-old British man applied for asylum at Munich airport in southern Germany saying that he no longer wants to be British, police said on Friday.

The reason for the asylum application was not, however, Britain’s impending departure from the European Union but the man’s fear that if he returns to Britain he will face a prison sentence.

The Munich police officers made inquiries with their counterparts in London and found out that the man had been arrested in June for a brawl, but had been later released on probation.

The German police officers then directed the man to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. The incident occurred on Wednesday, they said.
