TAIPEI (CNA) – The management of Yushan National Park said Thursday that littering has become a problem as people have been leaving behind immense amounts of trash when they visit the mountain area.

Since 2014, volunteers have cleaned up some 1,057 kilograms of trash in the park, which averages 250 kg per year, the management said, citing figures valid as of October this year.

With the number of visitors to the 103,121-hectare park averaging 1 million per year, the environment and ecology will be under great strain if people continue to leave behind plastic bottles, food waste, toilet paper, cigarette butts and other types of trash, the management said.

With this in mind, the management said, it is asking visitors to Yushan National Park to take their trash with them when they leave.

Visitors are also reminded to use the toilet facilities properly so as not to contribute to pollution of the natural habitat, the park management said.
