Strong cold air mass forecast to hit Taiwan Thursday

Northern Taiwan will see wet and cold weather Thursday as a continental cold air mass arrives, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Thursday.

Taipei, March 6 (CNA) A strong continental cold air mass will arrive in Taiwan on Thursday and send the mercury plummeting to below 10 degrees Celsius in parts of Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

From Thursday until Saturday, temperatures are forecast to drop to 10-12 degrees in the greater Taipei area and to 9 degrees in coastal and open areas at night and during the early morning hours, the bureau said.

The weather is not expected to warm up until March 12, it said.

On Tuesday, seasonal northeasterly winds strengthened early in the morning, pushing temperatures down to 15-16 degrees in northern Taiwan and 16-20 degrees in central and southern Taiwan.

Daytime highs on Tuesday were forecast to be around 20 degrees in northern Taiwan, 27-29 degrees in central and southern Taiwan, and 19-24 degrees in the east, according to the CWB.

There is a chance of sporadic rain in northern and eastern parts of the island and in mountainous areas of central and southern Taiwan, the bureau said.
