Taipei, May 16 (CNA) The warm weather engulfing Taiwan will continue Wednesday, with daytime temperatures likely to hit 34 degrees Celsius, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
The CWB said sunny skies are expected around the country because of a Pacific high pressure system, with the mercury forecast to reach 33-34 degrees in western Taiwan and 31-32 degrees in the east.
Despite the generally sunny weather, thundershowers are likely in mountainous areas around Taiwan and in low-lying parts of western Taiwan in the afternoon.
The CWB warned that many parts of western Taiwan could also be exposed to dangerously high levels of ultraviolet radiation around midday Wednesday, and it urged people planning to spend time outdoors to take the necessary precautions.
The intense heat is expected to continue in the coming days, with the CWB saying the warm weather will persist until May 22.
On Thursday, temperatures in southeastern Taiwan could move even higher in the afternoon as waves of foehn winds — warm, gusty winds that blow down the slopes of mountain ranges – affect the area, the CWB said.
