Taipei, June 20 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a torrential rain warning on Wednesday for Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County in southern Taiwan.
In other areas of southern Taiwan, an extremely heavy rain alert is in place for Tainan City and Chiayi County, while a heavy rain warning has been issued for Taichung City and Nantou City in central Taiwan, and Changhua County, Yunlin County and Taitung County in the south.
Heavy rain means accumulated rainfall of more than 80mm in 24 hours or more than 40mm of rainfall in one hour, while extremely heavy rain refers to more than 200mm in 24 hours or accumulated rainfall of more than 100mm in three hours and torrential rain points to accumulated rainfall of more than 350mm in 24 hours, according to the CWB.
As of 10:30 a.m., rainfall in Taiwu, Chunjih, Laiyi townships and Xinhsin District of Kaohsiung had topped 300mm over the past 24 hours, the CWB said.
Earlier in the day, the CWB said that as southwesterly winds gradually fade, the weather in Taiwan is expected to turn more stable over the next week, but sporadic showers in the afternoons remain likely in both mountainous and low-lying areas.
