A series of earthquakes have struck central Taiwan since 6:09 p.m. on Friday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

From 6 o’clock in Friday evening to Saturday morning, magnitude4.8, 4.1 , 3.6 ,5, 3.1 and 4.1 , totally 6 earthquakes occurred. The epicenter of the earthquakes all locatedin Puli, Nantou County. Some areas in Taichung, Changhua and Chiayi could also feel the quakes, where intensity ranges from 2 to 3.

Many local residents were woken up by the quakes in the morning.

“Earthquakes strike Puli again!”Residents were scared and about the escape from their own houses.

The Central Weather Bureau said the earthquakes were a normal release of tectonic pressure. So farno injuries or other major damage was reported, but CWB still appeals people to be well prepared for shockproof.

Earthquake is not rarely seen in Taiwan, but for people live in Nantou, any occurrence of earthquake just reminds them the tragedy of “921”.

On 21 September 1999, magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Nantou Countyat 01:47:12 local time. 2,415 people were killed, 11,305 injured, and NT$300 billion worth of damage was done.

With such huge casualties, it can be understood that why local residents of Nantou reacted fiercely although the biggest intensity of earthquake was magnitude5 in the past 24 hours.
