Taipei, Aug. 23 – The petition for rectifying the participating name from “Chinese Taipei” to “Taiwan” for 2020 Tokyo Olympic started earlier this year is ending soon the end of this month. The support rate of the campaign rises significantly to 65% after all the recent bullying actions from China.
According to former Minister of National Defense Tsai, Ming-Shian (蔡明憲), when the campaign just get started, the amount of the petitions is less than 100,000, but now after the East Asian Youth Games (東亞青運) and 85°C bakery cafe incidents, the positive signing rate doubles and even triples.
Neither Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) or Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) is leaning towards supporting the campaign. Mr. Tsai believes that the referendum can reach its target of 350,000 petitions by the end of this month, exceeding the legal threshold of 280,000 petitions. Now there are about 200,000 petitions collected, 80,000 ones are still needed from the remaining six days till Aug 29.
Another petition pushing its deadline is the vote for LGBT marriage in the Civil Law amendment (婚姻平權案) and Gender Equity Education Act (性別平等教育法), which demands for specific clarifications and implementation in different stages of compulsory education regarding education onsentiments, sex, gender equity and LGBT.
The campaign was launched after the Central Election Commission (中央選舉委員會) passed the referendum which opposes gay marriage proposed by Family Guardian Coalition (護家盟), which started in 2013, declaring that marriage is only between a man and a woman.
This petition is only till the end of this month. Both acts for LGBT marriage and gender equity education require 300,000 petitions but are only half way done.
If you wish to vote for the referendum, you can visit the booths set in different cities or mail the petition form to the specified address. For more information, please visit the official Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/Vote4LGBT/
