Typhoon Cong-Rey will bring heavy rain or even extremely heavy rain to northern and northeastern Taiwan, and other parts of the country will see some rain.

Typhoon Kong-Rey was downgraded from a super typhoon Wednesday morning but will still start to bring rain to Taiwan on Thursday when the storm gets closer to the island, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

CWB forecaster Lin Ting-yi said the typhoon, the 25th storm in the West Pacific Ocean so far this year, will approach Taiwan on Thursday but is not expected to make landfall on the island.

Chien-ming Wang elated at Golden Horse nomination of film about him

Chien-ming Wang (王建民), a former ace pitcher with the New York Yankees, said Monday he was thrilled to learn that a documentary about him had been nominated for a Golden Horse award.

After the film “Late Life: The Chien-ming Wang Story” was nominated Monday for the Golden Horse award for Best Documentary, Wang said he hoped it would inspire young baseball players in Taiwan.

“I’m thrilled and really looking forward to sharing my story with everyone else,” said Wang who is in the United States promoting the documentary that features his many comeback attempts and struggles in his professional baseball career.

Taiwan to provide rescue and relief aid to quake-hit Indonesia

Taiwan is preparing to send relief supplies and a rescue team to Indonesia to assist in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Sulawesi Island on Sept. 28, two organizations said Tuesday.

Soon after Indonesia issued a call early Tuesday for rescue and relief assistance, the New Taipei Fire Department began assembling a team of 36 rescue workers and six sniffer dogs, the city government said.

Taiwan issues travel alert for Vietnam over new imported Zika case

Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a travel alert for Vietnam after it confirmed a new case of Zika virus infection that was imported from the Southeast Asian country, a CDC official said Tuesday.

The case represents the second confirmed imported case of Zika virus infection this year, involving a Taiwanese man who was infected while working in Vietnam between June 24 and Sept. 23, according to CDC Epidemic Intelligence Center Director Liu Ting-ping.
