Cooler weather forecast for National Day

The weather in northern Taiwan will turn cool and wet on Wednesday, the National Day holiday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

As seasonal northeasterly winds strengthen, temperatures are likely to drop to lows of 20 degree Celsius on the national holiday, the CWB said Monday.

1,303 Gogoro users set Guinness world record

A group of electric scooter riders set a new Guinness world record early Sunday when they staged a “quiet” flash mob cascading down the Taipei Bridge linking Taipei and New Taipei.

Some 1,303 riders of Gogoro-brand smart scooters from around Taiwan gathered at a park in New Taipei’s Sanchong District just after midnight before heading down the bridge across the Tamsui River.

Taiwan among countries supporting relief work in Indonesia

Medical resources and relief supplies mobilized by Taiwan’s government and charity groups have been made available to disaster-hit Palu on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi to help the area recover from a devastating earthquake and tsunami on Sept. 28.

Taiwan is among the 25 countries and four international organizations providing help to survivors of the natural disasters, according to Indonesian deputy foreign minister Abdurrahman Mohammad Fachir.

Paraguayan President in Taiwan for state visit

President Mario Abdo Benitez of Paraguay, Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in South America, arrived in Taiwan on Sunday on a state visit and will attend National Day celebrations on Wednesday.

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) is scheduled to welcome Abdo and his wife Silvana Lopez Moreira de Abdo with full military honors Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Sunday night.

Taiwan participates in opening of Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires

A team representing Taiwan paraded into the opening ceremony of the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games held at the iconic Obelisk on Saturday. This was the first opening ceremony to have taken place outside a stadium and to be open to the general public.

The 12-day games attract 4,000 athletes aged 15-18 from 206 countries and areas who will compete in 32 sports events.
